چکیده

We present a melt percolation model incorporating finite solid diffusion to provide a quantitative constraint on how melt migrates through the oceanic lower crust at fast-spreading ridge axes. The lower crustal, layered gabbro in the Oman ophiolite, which was formed at a fast-spreading ridge, shows correlated variations in primary mineral compositions with a vertical wavelength less than 100–200 m. Possible effects of porous melt flow on these compositional variations are considered. The results of our numerical modeling indicate that melt transport by porous flow must be less than a few percent of the total incoming melt flux from the sub-ridge mantle, in order to preserve the observed correlations between different mineral compositions. It is also shown that rapid damping of compositional variations due to finite solid diffusion is likely, further reducing the potential role of porous flow melt transport. The dominant mode of melt migration through the oceanic lower crust must be more focused than pervasive porous flow, such as ascent in melt-filled fractures.  1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Periodic Formation of Magma Fractures and Generation of Layered Gabbros in the Lower Crust Beneath Oceanic Spreading Ridges

There must be a transition from continuous porous flow to transient formation of melt-filled fractures in the region of magma transport below oceanic spreading centers. This transition may occur at permeability barriers that impede porous flow of melt, at the base of the oceanic crust and within the lower crust. We summarize evidence for formation of melt-filled lenses at the base of the crust ...

Rapid hydrothermal cooling above the axial melt lens at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge

Axial melt lenses sandwiched between the lower oceanic crust and the sheeted dike sequences at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges are assumed to be the major magma source of oceanic crust accretion. According to the widely discussed "gabbro glacier" model, the formation of the lower oceanic crust requires efficient cooling of the axial melt lens, leading to partial crystallization and crystal-melt...

Differentiation of planetesimals and the thermal consequences of melt migration

We model the heating of a primordial planetesimal by decay of the short-lived radionuclides Al and Fe to determine (1) the time scale on which melting will occur, (2) the minimum size of a body that will produce silicate melt and differentiate, (3) the migration rate of molten material within the interior, and (4) the thermal consequences of the transport of Al in partial melt. Our models incor...

3d Compressible Melt Transport with Mesh Adaptivity

Melt generation and migration are important processes for the evolution of the Earth’s interior and impact the global convection of the mantle. While they have been the subject of numerous investigations, the typical time and lengthscales of melt transport are vastly different from global mantle convection, which determines where melt is generated. This makes it difficult to study mantle convec...

Melt Extraction From The Mantle Beneath Mid-Ocean Ridges

As the oceanic plates move apart at midocean ridges, rocks from Earth’s mantle, far below, rise to fill the void, mostly via slow plastic flow. As the rock approaches the top of its journey, however, partial melting occurs, so that the upper 6 kilometers of oceanic crust are composed of melts, which both erupt on the seafloor as lava and crystallize beneath the surface to form what are known as...
